Using Zoom – You need to read this before your next meeting.

Zoom, in its present form, has several security vulnerabilities that you need to be aware of that can be managed and addressed before your next meeting.
These security issues include the following:

  • Uninvited people joining your meeting
  • People posting inappropriate content
  • Transfer files you may not want to other people
  • Joining the audio portion without notice

Unless you are discussing sensitive data, the security issues are more of an annoyance and privacy concern. It could be embarrassing if something inappropriate were played or displayed during the meeting.

Here are settings you need to adjust if you are the host to prevent these scenarios.

  • Set a meeting password and require the meeting password to join
  • note: You can embed the password in the meeting link if you trust others, not too sure the link.
  • Require passwords for participants to join by phone.
  • Enable – Play a sound when people join or leave.
  • If you invite ten people and ten people are on an, you then hear the sound. You know someone uninvited has joined.
  • Disable file transfers in chat if people are not very tech-savvy
  • enable “Allow the host to put attendee on hold” – this removes the person from the meeting
  • Disable “Allow removed participants to rejoin.”

If your meeting is somewhat sensitive and you don’t have a considerable number of attendees. Enable “Waiting Room” – this requires the host to admit each person individually.

Zoom has excellent features, and they are working on improving security, but you can still protect you from meeting privacy in the meantime.
