The Dark Side of buying an Apple Computer
Don’t get me wrong. Apple’s are excellent computers and tend to last along time. For instance, I have a 2012 MacBook pro then still runs fine. I replaced the memory and hard drive, so it has a few more years of life left.
That said, here is the first problem you will run into if you keep your mac longer than what Apple wants. You may not be able to upgrade the OS to the latest version. Right now, I cannot upgrade my, still functioning, 2012 MacBook Pro to the newest OS. Apple builds in features that are incompatible with older mac hardware.
Dark Side #1
The reason is they want you to buy a new mac. Apple does not make money on the Operating System (OS). They give that away for free. They make money by adding features to the OS that make your computer obsolete even though you may a fully functional computer.
Dark Side #2
Apple is moving away from allowing users to upgrade the hard drives in their computers. I have upgraded numerous hard drives in my macs and friends’ macs. They were not always easy, but I never had a botched upgrade. With the newer models, if you want more internal storage, you have to add it at purchase time at apple prices, which tend to be 30% higher than compatible hard drives. This is because Apple is directly attaching the storage to the motherboard.
Fortunately, you can get external drives that can be attached via USB, Firewire at a fraction of the cost of adding a bigger hard drive at purchase time. Here is an example. I purchased a 2020 Mac-mini with 512gb hard drive. If I wanted a 1TB hard drive instead, it would have cost an additional $180.00. If I wanted a 2TB hard drive it would have cost an additional $540.00. In my case I bought a 2TB external drive for $269.00.
Next time you buy, and Apple computer check the following.
- Is the memory user updatable?
- Determine how big a hard drive you need.
- Is the hard drive user updatable?
- Check IFxit.com to see how the rate the repairability of the model you are interested in.
- Always purchase AppleCare
